Kieu Hoang Winery inks China distribution deal

NAPA CARNEROS -- Kieu Hoang Winery, which purchased the Michael Mondavi winery facility in June, on Tuesday said it signed an exclusive agreement intended to expand distribution of the brand in China.

The deal was signed via Shanghai KHKMY Import & Export Co., Ltd., with Jianmin Pharmacy (www.gyjm.com.cn), a subsidiary of Guangzhou Pharmaceuticals Corp.

The agreement will help the winery market its wine both online and at retail to Chinese consumers, according to Ian Scally, winery general manager.

"Marketing wine in a pharmacy in the United States is a very usual practice, whereas in China, this is unique as Jianmin Pharmacy Chain is the only pharmacy with license to sell wine," he said in a statement.

The pharmacy will start marketing Kieu Hoang wines to its existing 500,000 online customers on Nov. 1.

Kieu Hoang Winery (707-253-1615, KieuHoangWinery.com) is owned and managed by an American businessman Kieu Hoang. The 20-acre property includes the crushing facility permitted to produce 100,000 cases of wine annually, two vineyards and a newly renovated tasting room. The winery had also recently purchased Guilliams Vineyards, a family-operated property near St. Helena.

Guangzhou Pharmaceuticals is a wholesaling and distribution company headquartered in Guangzhou, China, and is the third-largest pharmaceutical wholesaler in that country by revenue.
