NORTH BAY – Here’s an update on major construction projects around the North Bay:
Health Care
Marin Community Clinic saw the results of its first capital campaign come to fruition in recent months with the April 6 opening of its new 9,500-square-foot medical building located at 6100 Redwood Blvd. in Novato. The new clinic includes 18 examination and treatment rooms, a laboratory and a conference room.
The nonprofit, federally qualified health center also completed the construction of a 10,000-square-foot San Rafael location last summer, which is adjacent to the county’s new 74,000-square-foot, super-green health and wellness campus.
In Sonoma County, Sutter Health presented plans to the Board of Supervisors for its new north Santa Rosa hospital, a 70-bed facility with an adjoining, privately operated 28-bed surgery center. The project is estimated to cost about $176 million and is slated to open sometime in 2012.
The Marin Health Care District commenced financial planning for the required rebuild of most of its hospital, estimating construction to total about $300 million. Like Sutter Health’s Sonoma County hospital, Marin General must be seismically upgraded and will have to replace most of the existing structures. The board will continue planning for the groundbreaking this year, which must begin by 2011.
Construction on Kaiser Permanente’s new Santa Rosa hospital tower steamed forward after more than four years of planning and is expected to open on schedule in fall or winter of 2010. The five-story, 78-bed wing broke ground in late 2007 and is designed by TLCD Architecture of Santa Rosa. The hospital’s emergency department will relocate to the new building when it opens, and the fifth floor will remain skeletal to be built out on an as-needed basis. If completed, the space would add another 24 beds.
NorthBay HealthCare in Solano County unveiled its new 8,000-square-foot cardiovascular care center in April, built from a remodeled operating room wing. The project cost about $9 million and was part of more than $15 million in renovations, which includes other plans to double the size of lab facilities. The 4,000-square-foot, $5.5 million lab project broke ground in January and will be completed late this year or early in 2010. The previous lab building will be converted in to an on-site pharmacy.
Queen of the Valley Medical Center submitted plans for a new 66,100-square-foot hospital tower late last year, which will relocate the campus’ surgery center and intensive care unit. Planners hope to break ground on the $130 million project later this year with a planned opening sometime in 2012. The top floor of the building will contain 20 new ICU beds, up from its current capacity of 16, and the lab and pathology facilities will fill the ground level.
Commercial
Alcoholic beverage distributor Mesa Beverage Co. is in the final stages of construction on a 155,000-square-foot warehouse near Charles M. Schulz – Sonoma County Airport north of Santa Rosa.
Petaluma-based Basin Street Properties is outfitting part of its recently completed second building at Harvest Business Center near the north Santa Rosa airport for a new Veterans Affairs Administration clinic. The 40,000-square-foot class A building is the second of three such structures to be built in the project.
The housing portion of Signature Properties’ four-story Millworks redevelopment project in the historic downtown area of Novato has started to reach completion with the release of the first 10 of 124 condominiums and townhouses in the development. The Whole Foods Market store that will occupy the first floor is set to open in spring 2010.
San Rafael-based Seagate Properties plans to complete the second phase of San Rafael Corporate Center toward the end of the third quarter. In addition to the 155,000 square feet of class A office space in two buildings finished in 2001 by the previous owner, Seagate is constructing 160,000 more square feet in two office buildings plus a parking structure. The third and final phase, to be built upon demand, will have an 84,000-square-foot office building and another garage.
Scannell Properties is preparing a 650,000-square-foot distribution warehouse in American Canyon for Napa-based Biagi Bros. Transportation & Warehousing for use by Jackson Family Wines.
Institutional
Napa Valley College has four major projects under construction at the south Napa campus from Measure N bond money. The largest portion is the Instructional Center for Performing Arts, which includes a 500-seat auditorium and is about 40 percent toward completion in spring 2010. About one-third complete is the two-story Fieldhouse/North Gym, which at anticipated completion this fall will be used by the Criminal Justice and Adaptive Physical Education programs.
Also about one-third done is the two-story, 60,000-square-foot Library & Learning Resource Center, set to be the new location for the library, media services and the testing and tutoring center in spring 2010. Due to complete in late spring of this year is a new ceramics building for the Arts Center.
Just north of the Sonoma State University campus in Rohnert Park, the $110 million Green Music Center has much of the major construction work completed nine years after ground-breaking, but the project still needs $16.9 million to be finished. The music education building opened last year, and the hospitality and conference center is set to open this summer. The 1,400-seat concert hall is complete but for the seats, sound and lighting systems, lobby and areas backstage. The 4,500-square-foot Schroeder’s Recital Hall is also part of the complex of buildings.
