The difference today from even 10 years ago is that the CNC machines are directly networked to PCs running CAM (computer aided manufacturing) systems. These PCs are in turn directly connected to the internet and are receiving solid model CAD (computer aided design) data directly from the part designers. What is new in this is the direct link between designer and the CNC machine, with the shop providing most of the value in CAM programming and CNC setup in between. While the individual elements are already decades old (CNC, CAM, etc.), it is only recently that it has reached this high level of integration via the web.

They are really doing very complex work with high technology. Maybe the shops are small, but the work they are doing is extraordinary.
