Santa Rosa’s Deposition Sciences is seen as acquisition target, valued at $810 million

To turn its attention to telecom, DSI has licensed its lamp coating technology to Advanced Lighting Technology subsidiary APL Engineering Materials and is restructuring its aerospace and government business units in favor of telecom, Mr. Bartolomei says.

MicroDyn systems deliver yields 10 to 20 times better than conventional evaporation and sputtering coating systems. IsoDyn equipment also makes more efficient, less expensive ball lenses feasible, since evaporation systems can?t consistently coat spherical surfaces. Ball lenses are used to focus laser beams into optical fiber.

In light of such potential efficiencies, anticipated telecom revenues, and increasing acquisition of coating companies such as JDS Uniphase?s multibillion-dollar purchase of Santa Rosa-based Optical Coating Laboratory, Raymond James has speculated that DSI is ripe for acquisition this fiscal year and has estimated the company?s value at $810 million.

Before founding DSI in 1985, Mr. Bartolomei, John Aguilera, Jim Brosnan, Mike Robbins, and Norm Boling worked for OCLI.

Mr. Bartolomei says DSI has been approached for acquisition in the past, but ADLT isn?t interested in selling at the moment. In fact, ADLT is trying to build independent market value in DSI and attract talent for the expansion by starting a stock option plan for the company in late October.
