Tellabs to trim overall workforce by 200

NAPERVILLE, Ill., PETALUMA -- Telecommunications equipment-maker Tellabs Inc., which has 150 employees in Petaluma, said today it will cut 200 jobs over the next several quarters from its overall workforce of 3,000.

A Tellabs spokesman said it was unknown how many of the cuts would be in Petaluma where employment is down significantly from its peak during the telecom boom.

Tellabs also reported a big jump in profit of $62.1 million, or 16 cents a share, up from $12.8 million, or 3 cents a share, a year earlier. Excluding pretax charges, earnings were flat at 9 cents.

Revenue fell 4.7% to $389.3 million.

Tellabs shares closed Monday at $5.90.

Tellabs acquired Petaluma's Advanced Fibre Communications in 2004 for $1.5 billion.
