SANTA ROSA — Kaiser Permanente Medical Center of Santa Rosa held its fifth annual “Neighbors in Health” on Sunday, an event geared toward providing health care services for uninsured children throughout Sonoma County.

Last year, nearly 400 uninsured children received a day of free health care, Kaiser said. It also will again this year assist children in finding health insurance or a medical home. The turnout this year was expected to be higher than last year, as more uninsured children sought services.

The event provides free doctor visits; back-to-school and sports physicals; immunizations for numerous diseases, including Whooping Cough; vision and hearing screenings; dental services; and insurance assistance. Sonoma County has seen a dramatic increase in Whooping Cough, and physicians have said children are particularly vulnerable. Last year there were four cases, compared with 48 this year.

Neighbors in Health is co-sponsored in partnership with United Way of Wine Country, The Press Democrat, the city of Santa Rosa and Sonoma County.
