Fall start needed to meet deadlines for extension on seismic standards

SANTA ROSA – Sutter Health will break ground on its new $284 million hospital next to the Wells Fargo Center for the Arts a week from today. The project will replace the seismically unfit Chanate facility.

The new hospital and medical campus, totaling more than 316,000 square feet and 25 acres, was recently approved by the Sonoma County Board of Supervisors after it was determined that Sutter met specific county health agreements. The environmental impact review and land use permits were approved in a prior meeting.

The first phase of construction is scheduled for Oct. 1 and will initially include 80,000 square feet of medical office buildings, Sutter officials said after the project met final, unanimous approval.

Unger Construction and HGA Architecture, both of Sacramento, will carry out the major elements of building and design.

But Sutter said it will also look to as many local companies as possible to assist the project. It has identified the following North Bay companies that will contribute to the many facets of building:

* Concept Development Associates in Santa Rosa

* Ghilotti Construction in Santa Rosa

* Horticultural Associates in Glen Ellen

* Mead & Hunt in Santa Rosa

* Peterson Mechanical in Santa Rosa

* Quadriga Landscape Architecture & Planning in Santa Rosa

* Sponomore & Associates in Santa Rosa.

The North Bay companies, along with the needed labor, will provide about 1,500 jobs, Sutter estimated.

In order to meet the state-mandated deadline for construction of Dec. 31, which will grant Sutter an extension on meeting state-mandated seismic standards to December 2014, Sutter needs to meet certain milestones. The October beginning, Sutter said, will enable it to meet such milestones.
