SACRAMENTO - Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger signed a number of bills into law last week. Among them were Senate Bill 1440, authored by Senator Alex Padilla (D-Pacoima). This bill creates clarity for community college students seeking to transfer to the California State University (CSU) system.
Senate Bill 1440 charges the two college systems with establishing a process that guarantees community college transfer students with a 2.0 GPA admission to a CSU campus at junior status while also granting them an associate degree.
The California Restaurant Association celebrated the enactment of Senate Bill 602, food safety legislation also authored by Sen. Padilla. The new law requires all employees who handle food in restaurants earn a California Food Handler Card by passing a training and test within 30 days of hire. The card will be accepted statewide and valid for three years.
Gov. Schwarzenegger also signed into law two wine-related bills authored by Senator Patricia Wiggins, D-Santa Rosa. Senate Bill 806 allows for the return of wine taken out of state where the seller held a beer and wine wholesaler's license or an off-sale retail license that only sells wine. Existing law only allows consumers to return wine to winegrowers with a winegrower, or ABC Type 02, license.
Senate Bill 1096 modifies current restrictions on how wine and brandy manufacturers are allowed to respond to consumer inquiries to include "electronic inquiry" instead of "electronic Internet inquiry," which excludes text messaging.
