Wine exports increase 25 percent in value, nearly 2 percent in volume

U.S. wine exports, 90 percent from California, bounced back from the 2009 recessionary slump in value to reach a new record of $1.15 billion, but the volume of wine shipped out of the country didn't return to 2007 or 2008 levels, according to figures released today.

"This positive news indicates that our goal of $2 billion in wine export revenues by 2020 is achievable,” said "Bobby" Koch, Wine Institute president and chief executive officer.

Exports increased 1.9 percent in volume last year from 2009 to 112 million gallons and 25.6 percent in value to $1.14 billion (see table), according to analysis of federal government and trade data by the San Francisco-based Wine Institute.

About 20 percent of California's wine production goes to foreign markets. The biggest importer of U.S. wines (see table) is the European Union, followed by Canada, Japan, Hong Kong and the rest of China. Exports to the EU increased 14 percent in value and 11 percent in volume last year.
