Napa's sister city of Iwanuma, Japan, was hard hit by the recent earthquake and tsunami. Early unconfirmed reports say that more than 100 people died in Iwanuma and several thousand homes were destroyed. Iwanuma is home to Sendai Airport in Miyagi Prefecture. This area was close to the epicenter of the quake and was heavily impacted by both the quake and the tsunami.

A fundraiser in support of Iwanuma will be held at the Napa Valley Opera House on Sunday, March 27. Follow this link for details on donating to this event and the purchase of tickets.

Persons wishing to contribute to more general disaster relief can do so through the Napa County Chapter of the Red Cross. Checks made payable to “Japan Earthquake and Pacific Tsunami” can be mailed or dropped off at the local Red Cross office at 1790 Third St., Napa 94559, to be forwarded on to the National Red Cross relief effort.
