Marin College accreditation is reaffirmed

KENTFIELD -- College of Marin received official notice that its accreditation had been reaffirmed.

The accrediting commission met earlier this year and made its recommendation after reviewing College of Marin's Institutional Self Study Report and the report submitted by the evaluation team following their visit on Oct. 25--28, 2010.

"This, of course, is tremendous news and a positive reflection of the hard work and dedication of the College of Marin community in working toward meeting and/or exceeding the standards set forth by WASC," said Superintendent and President Dr. David Wain Coon.

Dr. Francis White, Dr. Coon's predecessor, came to College of Marin in 2004 shortly after the college was put on warning status by the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges, Western Association of Schools and Colleges.

The school was brought up to standard and since that occurred, the school performs self reviews and checks in with the commission regularly.

School officials said this reaffirmation is a "victory for college faculty, staff, students, administration and members of the board of trustees who made compliance with accreditation standards a top priority."

The Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges,  Western Association of Schools and Colleges commended the college for a variety of achievements, including effective use of the college's mission statement in governance and integrated planning.

The Commission also made a number of recommendations, including ensuring that the planning and budgeting processes are linked, development of a facilities master plan, allocation of resources to support distance education, acceleration implementing student learning outcomes, and development of a sustainable technology plan. The college will have to fully address the Commission's recommendations in a follow-up report in October 2011.

"Although we continue to have our work ahead of us on behalf of our students, we clearly have much to celebrate," said Dr. Coon.
