Sonoma supes name Correia assistant ag commissioner

SANTA ROSA -- The Sonoma County Board of Supervisors appointed Lisa Correia as assistant agricultural commissioner and sealer of the county's Agricultural Commissioner and Weights and Measures office.

The appointment, effective July 12, was made after a statewide search, with Ms. Correia being selected as the top candidate, according to an announcement by Sonoma County.

She has over 24 years of experience, beginning her career with the county of Sonoma County Agricultural Commissioner’s Office in 1992 and previously working with Contra Costa and Monterey County agricultural commissioner’s offices. She has experience in agricultural regulatory programs, community outreach, management and administration.

She attended California Polytechnic University at San Luis Obispo, where she earned an undergraduate crop science degree.

Most recently, she has been influential in leading the state Agriculture Department’s efforts to eradicate the European grape vine moth pest.

"Her collaborative efforts with CDFA, neighboring counties and local growers have been essential in the preventive quarantine response to this serious pest," according to the announcement.

In 2010, the moth was discovered in Sonoma County and identified as a destructive pest to winegrapes. The crop value is about $400 million annually.

Ms. Correia continues to work to pursue partnerships between the agricultural community and regulatory agencies in an effort to implement Sonoma County’s recently passed Frost Protection Ordinance.

"I am fortunate for the continued opportunity to serve this community through the Agricultural Commissioner’s Office, protecting what makes Sonoma County special and promoting our agricultural heritage," she said in a statement.

The Agricultural Commissioner’s Office is a local regulatory agency responsible for environmental and public health and safety, promoting agriculture, and consumer protection and equity in the market place through the weights and measures programs.
