Autodesk acquires Canadian gaming software developer

SAN RAFAEL -- Design software developer Autodesk Inc. (Nasdaq: ADSK) has acquired the assets of Montreal-based GRIP Entertainment Technology, which makes artificial-intelligence tools for game software.

Terms of the deal weren't disclosed, other than that it includes GRIP's technology and that the founders and key programmers will join Autodesk.

“The acquisition accelerates Autodesk’s strategy to offer a more complete, simplified solution for the creation of believable interactive characters,” said Marc Stevens, vice president of Autodesk's Games group. “The technology and expertise acquired complement Autodesk’s existing Gameware offerings, including Autodesk Kynapse artificial intelligence middleware. This transaction will enable us to offer game developers a more comprehensive AI solution.”

Autodesk on its website revealed further details of how GRIP fits into its game software tools strategy.

Autodesk's stock price was $34.70 a share at the end of trading Monday, down 32 cents a share or nearly 1 percent from Friday.
