Legislation to help prevent the extinction of California’s native coho salmon was approved by the State Assembly on a bipartisan vote. AB 1961, authored by Assemblymember Jared Huffman (D-San Rafael), expedites the approval of voluntary projects that provide habitat improvements for these iconic and imperiled fish. Coho salmon have virtually disappeared in some areas of California; in other areas they are teetering on the brink of extinction. AB 1961, also known as the Coho Salmon Habitat Enhancement Leading to Preservation (HELP) Act, proceeds to the Senate for further consideration.
This June, Sonoma County is joining communities across the globe to raise awareness of elder abuse, and to encourage actions that empower older adults, educate the community and enhance intergenerational relationships. On Tuesday, June 12, a resolution proclaiming June 15 as World Elder Abuse Awareness Day in Sonoma County will be brought before the Board of Supervisors by the Human Services Department, the District Attorney’s Office and the Sheriff’s Office. The Area Agency on Aging Advisory Council and the Long Term Care Ombudsman will also address the Board about the issue of elder abuse prevention. This day is in alignment with the International Network for the Prevention of Elder Abuse, an organization that has promoted international elder abuse awareness in communities throughout the world since 2006.Retail
Athleta, LLC, has leased 3,798 square feet of inline space at the Town & Country Village shopping center in Palo Alto. Headquartered in Petaluma, Athleta is the women’s athletic apparel brand of Gap, Inc. that has been outfitting women athletes since 1998. The store is scheduled to open in July. Town & Country Village is located at the corner of El Camino Real and Embarcadero Road, directly across from Stanford University and is owned by CEP Town & Country Investors, LLC. This location is one of eleven that Athleta plans to open across the country before end of summer.Health Care
Sutter Solano Medical Center announced the purchase of a new Hana Fracture Table, an articulated table that allows surgeons to position patients for low-impact hip and other surgeries. The purchase was made possible only through charitable gifts from Solano County residents and businesses. The new Hana Fracture Table will be used to help with hip and knee replacements as well as long bone fractures. In addition to community donations, Sutter Health also gave a matching grant to its hospital in Vallejo that enable the hospital to purchase the fracture table and other equipment totaling $309,000.
