    Annadel Medical Group

    SANTA ROSA — The Annadel Medical Group has added physicians at an accelerating pace, making it arguably the fastest growing medical group in the region at a time health systems across the country seek to attract more physicians.  

    St. Joseph Health

    The group, which is affiliated with St. Joseph Health, Sonoma County, started with seven physicians in 2008. Since then, it has grown to 50 physicians and 10 nurse practitioners — across numerous practice areas, but with a heavy emphasis on primary care.  Just last week, the group added 13 physicians, with a mix of newcomers to the region as well as established Sonoma County physicians. Earlier this year, the group added another seven physicians for a total of 20 joining doctors over the last 10 months.

    Other health systems have similarly invested heavily into physician foundations, largely as a means to secure physicians — and hopefully their patients — in lieu of health care reform and anticipated physician shortages. The same is driving Annadel to aggressively seek out new physicians.

    Annadel Medical Group is the local physician organization that partners with the St. Joseph Heritage Healthcare medical practice foundation and St. Joseph Health.

    FAIRFIELD — Shortly after expanding its reach into Marin and Mendocino counties, Partnership HealthPaln, a nonprofit managed Medi-Cal provider, went on an aggressive hiring spree, saying it intended to increase its  280-person work force by about 30 percent.

    The move into Marin and Mendocino added some 38,000 Medi-Cal enrollees to its ranks, giving it a total of roughly 200,000 Medi-Cal patients across six counties — Solano, Yolo, Napa, Sonoma, Marin and Mendocino.

    Partnership HealthPlan is one of six not-for-profit county-organized health systems operating in the state. The quasi-public health plan administers benefits for some 200,000 total members across six counties, including Sonoma, Solano, Napa and Yolo. It has a 2011-2012 budget of $910 million.

    The health plan has said may grow further still with the looming implementation of health exchanges mandated by the federal health overhaul.

    Marin General Hospital

    GREENBRAE — As district hospitals look to evolve with the dramatically shifting health care landscape, no other district can quite keep pace with Marin General Hospital, overseen by the Marin Healthcare District for the past two years now.

    The 235-bed hospital played a leading role in forming a network of district hospitals that collectively share certain administrative services and seek to reduce costs for otherwise stand-alone hospitals. Marin General looked north for partners, finding them in 83-bed Sonoma Valley Hospital and 37-bed Palm Drive Hospital, both overseen by districts, and both of which similarly cited gaining economies of scale and further stability from the alignment.

    Additionally, in the two years that is has operated independently, the hospital acquired a total of six medical practices in Marin County, with the clear goal of adapting to health care reform by possibly forming an accountable care organization, a designation under the Affordable Care Act, with other organization such as the Meritage Medical Network and the Prima Medical Group. A total of 29 physicians are now associated with Marin General via the clinics.
