SANTA ROSA — Jackson Family Wines today said it reached an agreement with the Kunde family to buy the 260-acre Saralee’s Vineyard and Richard’s Grove property in Sonoma County’s Russian River Valley winegrowing region.
The sale is expected to close in December. Terms of the deal with Richard and Saralee McClelland Kunde weren’t disclosed.
Located at the northwest corner of the junction of River and Slusser roads, the property has 200 acres of vines in 50 varietal clones and a large rootstock test block.
“We’ve sourced grapes from this property for many years and know first-hand Saralee’s and Richard’s commitment to quality,” said Barbara Banke, chairwoman of Jackson Family Wines, in a statement. “We look forward to being the next stewards of this revered land.”
The Kunde’s said they plan to “downsize” their involvement in winegrape growing.
“We will still own three other vineyards, totaling over 80 acres, and will continue to grow for 15 vintners including Jackson Family Wines,” Ms. Kunde said. “We are extremely pleased with the Jackson Family’s reputation of quality and their respect for the environment.”
Richard’s Grove at the north end of the property has been used to hold a number of agricultural and community events. Ms Banke said the company plans to continue doing so.
