Where do flights need to go from Santa Rosa? Have other ideas for the airport? Leave your thoughts in the Comments section below.

Horizon Air, part of Seattle-based Alaska Airlines and the only commercial airline at Charles M. Schulz–Sonoma County Airport, on Monday reported the highest number of passengers traveling through Santa Rosa in the nearly six years since such service returned to the city.

The airport accommodated nearly 214,000 commercial passengers in all of 2012, beating 2011′s previous record by 3.2 percent.

Seattle-based Alaska Airlines brought back commercial airline service to Santa Rosa in 2007. It’s Horizon Air company operates five flights a day from Santa Rosa to Portland, Seattle, Los Angeles and San Diego.

It would be great to have flights to Las Vegas back. As well as closer trips such as Reno/Tahoe.

They might need a couple more flights, but not a whole new airline.

I wish Southwest or USAir operated out of Santa Rosa. It is so incredibly expensive and time-consuming to get to Oakland and SFO that any additional fare charged by those airlines would be worth it, and the difference would likely be far less than the nearly $75 round trip it costs to take the shuttle to SFO and OAK.

If Santa Rosa is to strive, I believe that somewhere in the near future they may need another airline. With the opening of the casino in Rohnert Park it may be a necesity. But then again we are talking railway very soon, I think it is a wait and see at this particular period.

Santa Rosa is a small town and for those who have lived here our entire lives, it is a great place to raise a family. It would be a shame to have all the bells and whistle of a larger city and also have their problems

They need to bring back the Las Vegas Flights and add a flight to Denver.

With more competition the better the airport will be! If it is strong now imagine what a competiting carrier will do! What about United or Frontier to Denver? American to LA or United to SF!

It would be great to add a later morning flight to Los Angeles and have it land at Burbank or Long Beach.

Given how many Station Casino execs are and probably will be traveling up here now that Graton Casino is coming online this year adding Vegas back seems logical however once the casino is built and opens I imagine the reverse will happen – the North Bay will have a Vegas-style casino/resort in its backyard and the demand to go to Vegas will likely be much smaller.

And there’s just not enough population here to warrant additional airlines. Marin/Sonoma/Lake/Mendocino/Napa Counties are basically rural in composition and not densely populated like most of the Bay Area south of here. In all counties combined the population is less than a million and that’s across a very broad area. As an example, Alameda County is less than half the size of Sonoma County but has more than three times the population and of course more population than all the surrounding counties combined.

And I personally don’t see the big headache going to OAK or SFO. I get on the Sonoma Airport Express every time I go to SFO and it’s a stress-free 1-1.5 hours in the bus down there and relatively cheap for the convenience of it. Is it super-convenient to be able to go to a small, easily-accessible local airport that doesn’t have nearly the same headaches of a huge airport like SFO? Of course. But the cost of that convenience is very, very high, for the airlines and therefore the residents so we have to balance our desire for more services and routes with the reality that they probably can’t be cost-justified by the airlines.

I would like to see American Eagle fly out of STS with regional jets. It would be great to hop on a jet heading to Chicago or Dallas. Those two airports would get you to all points east. Frontier is fine for Denver, but that is it. Southwest will not come to STS because they only fly 737′s and we can handle that large a plane.

It would be great to have more flights going to Denver or Salt Lake City. Would also be great if Horizon had flights that stopped in San Jose.
