SANTA ROSA -- Santa Rosa Junior College has received a $200,000 grant from the National Science Foundation, meant to support education in sustainable agriculture over a three-year period, according to the college.
Awarded under the NSF's Advanced Technology Education program, the grant is intended to improve connections between the junior college, regional high schools and state universities with a strong agriculture education component.
Titled "Improving Pathways in Sustainable Agriculture Education for the North Bay Region of California," the grant will allow outreach to high school students and a for-credit summer academy to give those students early exposure to agriculture education. The first cohort will involve over 25 Sonoma County high school students, and will be held July 22-August 2.
Students enrolled in sustainable agriculture programs at the school will receive greater advising and curriculum enhancements that include increased course offerings and internship opportunities. In addition, the transition for graduates to four-year programs at schools such as University of California, Davis, University of California, Santa Cruz, Chico State University and Fresno State University.
