Describe the facilities you oversee: About 500,000 square feet of office, R&D and medical facilities for multiple owners, tenants and users.
Tell us a little bit about yourself: I am a committed Earthling, dedicated to saving the planet using my real estate license. I was born and raised in the North Bay and live in Petaluma with my wonderful husband and our two intelligent and talented teenagers.
After a few years of cheering from the sidelines, I was finally inspired to put my running shoes back on and can be found on weekends trying to shave a few seconds off my 5K race time.
What do you see as the role of the facilities managers within your organization?: Because we are a third-party facility management company, our managers are the key to our growth, our sustainability and our mission. Everybody has to work somewhere, and the facility managers are the connection between the owners, the tenants, the buildings, and the community in which they reside.
What is the achievement you are most proud of?: I have a wonderful marriage of 17 years to the finest person I know. That, and winning this award.
What is your biggest challenge today?: Commercial buildings contribute more to greenhouse-gas emissions and global warming than any other single source. This challenge is also our biggest opportunity for positive environmental impact. We have challenged ourselves to “green” every property we touch, meet every property and client where they are now and move them forward on the sustainability continuum — all while improving our clients’ return on investment.
What the next major project?: Our goal is to get one of our green retrofits LEED-certified.
What product or service would/or is helping you do your job more effectively?: My dedicated and talented team who are always keeping their eyes on the prize when it comes to our mission. That, and the awesome support of the vendors, have helped us to do more with less.
Also, GreenTraks energy tracking and carbon management software as a service has been a great help in monitoring and reporting on our resource usage.
How do you think your profession will change in the next five years?: I think that we will be managing virtual facilities, shared spaces, and getting much more involved in supply chain management.
Most admired businessperson outside your organization: Nariman Manoochehri of Petaluma-based Xandex , Inc., is a personal mentor and friend.
Current reading: Angels & Demons by Dan Brown.
Most want to meet: Pope Francis, Al Gore and George Clooney.
Stress relievers: Yes, please!!
Favorite hobbies: Running, gardening, kayaking, applauding friends and family in sports, music, theater, whatever.
Words that best describe you: Resilient, resourceful, sincere in wanting to make the world a better place.
Anything else?: The nicest compliment I ever received at work came from a new client: “The best thing about you, Carolyn, is that you are what you seem to be.”
