SMI names publishing veteran to head magazine division

SANTA ROSA -- Michael Zivyak, award-winning publishing industry executive, has been appointed to the position of president, magazine publishing at Sonoma Media Investments, the company announced today.

The announcement was made by Steve Falk, CEO of SMI, parent company of the Santa Rosa Press Democrat, Sonoma Index-Tribune, Petaluma Argus-Courier, North Bay Business Journal and Sonoma magazine.

“I couldn’t be more excited to welcome Michael to the Sonoma Media Investments family. A company is first and foremost about people and whenever we can add talent we are certain that our business will grow as a result,” said Mr. Falk. “As head of our new magazine division, he will be working on the expansion and growth of our current magazine products along with the possible acquisition or launch of new magazines in the North Bay.”

“Michael’s unique and attractive background in both traditional and new media, as well as regional and national publishing made him an ideal candidate,” said Mr. Falk. Mr. Zivyak was most recently VP/Publisher of Seattle Metropolitan Magazine and Chief Revenue Officer of online financial publication The Fiscal Times. 

Widely recognized for his work in the publishing industry, Mr. Zivyak previously was named as one of the “21 Most Intriguing People in Media” by MIN Magazine and also served on the Board of Directors of the City & Regional Magazine Association. During his tenure as founder and publisher of Berkshire Living, the publication received awards for general excellence and design every year it was eligible and amassed a diverse portfolio of media properties under the Berkshire Living banner, including magazines, websites, email newsletters, events, and custom publishing. Prior to Berkshire Living, Mr. Zivyak was publisher of SPIN Magazine, advertising director of business 2.0, and held advertising management and sales positions at Time Inc.’s Money Magazine and Conde Nast’s Glamour.
