Vintage 99 Label (707-888-5271, 925-294-5270, vintage99.com) got its first waterless offset and digital offset presses and accompanying finishing equipment running at the beginning of October in a 7,000-square-foot plant at 3663 Regional Pkwy. in a business park near Charles M. Schulz–Sonoma County Airport north of Santa Rosa. The company will continue to operate its current 10,000-square-foot facility to serve wineries in California’s interior and Central Coast.
“We’ve been contemplating another location for several years, but the state of the economy prohibited us,” said Kathleen Gonzales, co-founder and president.
As the name suggests, Mark and Kathleen Gonzales started Vintage 99 in 1999 and served a number of Central Valley, Sierra Foothills and Central Coast wineries. About a half-dozen years ago, Vintage 99 expanded to serve North Coast wineries.
“Business there has been growing, and it’s time to be local,” said Brian Lloyd, sales and marketing manager. “Wineries there were not able to go to Livermore for press checks on a regular basis.”
Running the Santa Rosa plant will be Gary Cane, formerly the Windsor-based vice president of California operations for Canada-based Meritage Specialty Packaging. He came to Meritage in 2011 after being vice president of manufacturing for Petaluma-based Paragon Label.
The initial printing technologies based in Santa Rosa will be traditional narrow web waterless offset as well as digital offset. The 20-employee Livermore plant also offers flexographic printing.
Finishing possibilities include foil stamping, embossing, debossing and texturizing. Honed over the past few years, texturizing is a final finishing step that manipulates the label to simulate the look of various paper textures.
Vintage 99 has adapted a 3-D rendering system for approximating the look of label artwork when applied to a bottle. Called “Visualizer,” it makes QuickTime videos that show how the label looks like as the bottle rotates.
In the lease deal for the Santa Rosa plant, signed Aug. 7, Rhonda Deringer and Jim Sartain of Keegan & Coppin/ONCOR Intenrational represented Vintage 99, and Ms. Deringer together will fellow Keegan & Coppin agent Mike Flitner represented property owners Jerry and Barbara Smyth.
The second North Coast Wine Industry Expo trade show and conference (wineindustryexpo.com), set for Dec. 5 in Santa Rosa, has stepped up the prominence of its conference portion by adding a number of industry notables to four educational sessions.
The Business Journal is a sponsor for the event, presented by Wine Industry Network of Healdsburg.
The first is “Branding Your Vineyard.” Vineyard owners and a grape broker are set to discuss the benefits a well-known property, tactics to build a vineyard’s reputation for quality and unique identity, and drivers for demand for a property’s grapes and resulting prices.
On that panel are set to be Brian Clements, vice president and partner of Novato-based Turrentine Brokerage; Steve Sangiacomo, partner of Sangiacomo Family Vineyards in Sonoma Valley; Michael Brughelli, sales director of Bien Nacido Vineyards near Santa Barbara. Panel moderator will be Nick Frey, recently retired president of Sonoma County Winegrape Commission.
“North Coast 2014 Financial Forecast” brings together industry experts and financial thought leaders to weigh in on economic trends and how to prepare for and/or capitalize on the opportunities that lie ahead. This interactive session will provide attendees with an assessment of recent happenings as well as short and long-term predictions for the year ahead.
Lined up for the financial panel are Joe Ciatti, principal at mergers-and-acquisitions advisory Zepponi & Company of Santa Rosa; Steve Jannicelli, senior manager of accounting firm Burr Pilger Mayer‘s Santa Rosa office; and Rick Boland, senior business consultant of accountancy Moss Adams and leader of the firm’s Santa Rosa-based wine practice. Panel moderator will be Rob McMillan, executive vice president and founder of Silicon Valley Bank‘s St. Helena-based Wine Division.
During “Trending Technology in the Cellar,” winemaker panelists are set to explore the latest in production technology and processes as well as discuss the challenges and solutions for those advancements.
Scheduled for the panel are Charles Tsegeletos, director of winemaking at Cline Cellars in Sonoma Valley; Penny Gadd-Coster, executive winemaker of Rack & Riddle Wine Services in Hopland; and Matt Hughes, winemaker of Six Sigma Ranch in Lake County. The moderator is set to be Clark Smith, founding owner of WineSmith Consulting.
Sales-and-marketing session “Driving Tasting Room Traffic” is set to focus on building a distinctive winery experience that attracts loyal brand fans. Panelists are set to be Colby Smith, founder and executive director of Concierge Alliance of Napa Valley and Sonoma (CANVAS); Beth Costa, executive director of the Wine Road of Northern Sonoma County; Amber Moshin, co-proprietor of Russian River Valley pinot noir producer Moshin Vineyards and Winery; and Chris Parker, hospitality manager at St. Supéry Vineyards & Winery of Rutherford.
Entrance to the trade show costs $25 a person. Registration for the conference costs $65 a session, discounted by $5 for each additional session.
The expo runs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Grace Pavilion and Hall of Flowers at Sonoma County Fairgrounds, located at 1350 Bennett Valley Rd. in Santa Rosa. The event last year attracted more than 3,000 attendees. There are more than 300 exhibitors signed up for this year.
Cecchetti Wine Company founder and owner Roy Cecchetti on Sept. 15 was feted in his father’s hometown of Lucca in the Tuscany region of Italy. He became one of 15 from five countries to have received a Medaglia d’Oro, or “gold medal.” It’s an annual award to successful Luccans abroad or their descendants, selected by the Department of Commerce for the city and province of Lucca and Associazoine Lucchesi Neil Mondo, a 45-year-old association for emigres of Luccan heritage.
Cecchetti Wine, established in 2007, made the 2013 Inc. 5000 fast-revenue-growth list for the third consecutive year. Revenue last year was $15.1 million, 146 percent higher than three years before. The company sold a 340,000 cases of Line 39, Backhouse, Redtree, Exitus and other of its brands, up 30 percent from 2011. “Strong” first-quarter sales have put the company on track to sell about 380,000 cases this year, which would be 10 percent to 15 percent growth from 2012, according to Cecchetti Wine.
