SANTA ROSA — An endowment established to help fund agricultural education at Santa Rosa Junior College has grown to its goal of $1 million.

The Warren G. Dutton Endowment of the Santa Rosa Junior College Foundation Agriculture Trust will guarantee annual funding to the Agriculture and Natural Resources department, supporting the cost of resources and facilities, according to a college announcement Wednesday.

“Dutton was a leader with a vision, focused on the future, and was totally committed to the welfare of Sonoma County Agriculture,” said Casey Cole, chair of the Agriculture and Natural Resources department and vice-chair of the Agriculture Trust, in the announcement. ”His legacy will live on through this established endowment.”

The endowment was established in honor of Mr. Dutton, a western Sonoma County winegrape and apple grower who served as the trust’s founding chair from 1999 until his death in 2001.

Mr. Warren had spearheaded significant fundraising efforts that supported student materials and the construction of a new classroom at the college’s 365-acre Shone Farm near Forestville.

A 2003 tribute to Mr. Dutton raised $500,000 that, coupled with large gifts from Gallo Family Vineyards, Harry A. Merlo Foundation and Sonoma County Vintners Foundation, amounted to more than $1 million toward equipping the Warren G. Dutton Agriculture Pavilion at the farm.
