2013 Healthiest Companies in the North Bay: Welcome ... and get moving!

Welcome to the Business Journal's third annual Healthiest Companies Awards, which recognize outstanding efforts of organizations and businesses across the North Bay in the critical movement toward wellness.

From nominations gathered over the summer and in September, The Business Journal selected 21 companies and organizations that were honored at the Journal's 2013 Health Care Conference on Nov. 13. The honorees included five new participants and represent a broad range of companies from health care, technology, construction, banking, professional services, education and even a spa.Profiles of the winners

Read about what makes the award-winners healthy companies.

"Millions of people spend at least half of their waking hours at work, so it makes perfect sense to make healthy choices a part of the workplace culture," said Business Journal Publisher Brad Bollinger. "The workplace wellness movement is unstoppable and is really a necessity if, as a society, we are serious about disease prevention and controlling health care costs."

"About a year ago I viewed an episode of the PBS series Weight of the Nation, and one scene has stuck with me," Mr. Bollinger continued. "It was the CEO of a large construction company whose health insurance rates were rising rapidly. He couldn't understand why until he looked around at his workforce and realized the many poor choices people were making with their health. The result was a robust workplace wellness program."

The 2013 winners were selected by the Journal editorial staff after gathering nominations and the completion and analysis of a survey of the organizations' health practices.

Please join us in congratulating this year's recipients and feel free to emulate in your organization their good practices highlighted on the following pages. There's plenty of help out there to design an effective program. Just ask your health provider, insurer or organizations like the Northern California Center for Well-Being.

Good luck.---Brad Bollinger, Publisher
