Top Real Estate Projects 2013: St. Joseph expands Napa, Santa Rosa hospitals

    2013 Top Real Estate Projects in the North BayNAPA and SANTA ROSA — Upgrade and expansion projects were initiated at two local St. Joseph Health hospitals in 2013.

    A three-story, 72,000-square-foot acute care center has been added to the Queen of the Valley Hospital in Napa. It is among the first in California on track to become gold LEED certified for health care facilities.

    The pavilion incorporates evidence-based design, which is the process of basing decisions about the built environment on credible research to achieve the best possible outcomes for patients, and operating efficiency for staff.

    The design utilized the latest virtual 3-D building information modeling (BIM) technique to create the new smart operating rooms, patient rooms and laboratories. BIM is part of the innovative project delivery system employed at the Queen to minimize paper and maximize communication among project team members.

    Online virtual construction project management (VICO) software was deployed to augment the BIM model and produce the fourth and fifth dimensions of schedule and cost for project coordination in real time.

    The Herman Family Pavilion houses the region’s first “hybrid” operating room, an OR suite that combines advanced imaging capabilities with robotics and traditional surgery. This technology will aid physicians during the most difficult and complex cancer, heart and brain procedures.

    The pavilion will also include six “smart ORs” outfitted with flat screen monitors and an in-room camera system for remote communication between physicians and their colleagues.

    These rooms are reinforced with robust steel framing in the event of an earthquake, and to minimize vibrations during sensitive operating procedures.

    There are 20 large intensive care rooms filled with ambient light and designed to encourage family-assisted patient care, and featuring sleeper sofas and desks with data outlets.

    A new clinical and pathology laboratory, equipped with the latest technology, also contains a video system linked to operating rooms, providing real-time communications between surgeons and pathologists.

    This project was substantially completed in June at a cost of $120 million. CDHP, licensing and final Office of State Health Planning and Development (OSHPD) signoff are scheduled for December, and the facility is planning to open and accept patients in February 2014.

    Expanded emergency, trauma center, Santa Rosa

    Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital’s Emergency Department Trauma Center is the area’s only level 2 Center specializing in trauma, neurosurgery, and orthopedics 24 hours a day — as well as treating the chronically ill, injured patients those suffering from life-threatening conditions such as stroke and heart attack.

    The recent renovation added 50 percent more space to the Emergency Department.

    The 4,228-square-foot expansion significantly enlarged the existing 19-bay, 9,280-square-foot ER that houses 26 private treatment rooms, bringing the total ER space to 13,500 square feet. The cost of this project is $15 million.

    A sunlit, enlarged waiting area with seating for 60 people has been added along with an expanded registration and reception area. There is additional space for physician consultations with patient families. A furnished outdoor patio and healing garden were also part of this project.

    Six patient rooms have enclosed walls and private doors — an improvement over less soundproof privacy drapes. By June 2014, all treatment beds in Memorial’s ER will be similarly upgraded.

    This upgrade is also designed to more quickly triage and care for patients with less-acute conditions.

    “We’re excited to open this state-of-the-art facility,” said Todd Salnas, president of St. Joseph Health in Sonoma County. “It means more personalized, private care for our patients and greater comfort. In addition, the expanded space will also enable us to reduce patient wait times.”

    This well-planned project helps ensure that all patients are served more efficiently as patient volumes increase.

    The hospital treats approximately 1,650 trauma patients annually and some 38,925 patients are seen in Memorial’s Emergency Department each year — an average of about 100 patients per day.

    The Bay Area Consumer’s Checkbook recently rated Santa Rosa Memorial as Sonoma County’s top provider of emergency care for complex cases.

    “As one of the leading providers of integrated health care and community outreach services for Sonoma County and the North Coast region, Memorial’s growing network of services reflects the ongoing commitment of St. Joseph Health to continually improve the health and quality of life of people in the communities we serve,” Mr. Salnas said.
