North Coast to add jobs through 2020

Employment projections for California North Coast counties from 2010 to 2020 show significant gains in both the fastest growing and largest expanding job categories, according to state-conducted surveys.

The Employment Development Department (www.labormarketinfo.edd.ca.gov) updates projections every two years and cover industry employment -- including self-employment, unpaid family workers, private household workers, farm and nonfarm employment -- and occupational employment -- new jobs from industry growth and job openings due to the need for replacements.

Educational services, health care and social assistance, along with leisure and hospitality, are among the highest growth categories in all five of the North Bay regions included in this report.

Professional and businesses services were in the top job-expansion categories in four regions, and retail trade was listed as a key jobs-growth sector in three areas of the region.

Other industry job growth categories found in these same regions include manufacturing, nursing and residential care as well as within the government sector.  

The following are highlights for select North Bay counties based on EDD data:Sonoma County

Industry employment is expected to reach 222,600 by 2020, an increase of 13.7 percent over the 10-year period. All 13 of the nonfarm sectors are expected to grow by more than 25,000 jobs led by:Professional and business services to add 6,200 jobs;Educational services, health care and social assistance, 3,700;Retail and trade, 2,900, led by growth of 1,200 jobs in food and beverage stores;Leisure and hospitality, 2,900.

Occupational-employment projections anticipate 74,100 additional jobs, 27,900 of which would be from industry growth and 46,200 from job-replacement openings. Napa County

Industry employment is expected to reach 89,100 by 2020, an increase of 22.1 percent, led by the following four sectors:Manufacturing category is projected to add the most jobs, 3,100; Leisure and hospitality, 2,900;Professional and business services, 1,700, led by 1,100 more jobs in administrative and support as well as waste management and remediation services;Education services, health care and social assistance, 1,700.

The county's occupational employment is forecast to total 33,980 jobs, 16,360 from industry growth and about 17,620 replacements.Marin, San Francisco, San Mateo counties

This tri-county area is projected to have industry employment of more than 1.24 million jobs by 2020, an increase of 18.7 percent.

Almost 180,000 nonfarm jobs are projected to be added during that time, with 60 percent of all projected growth in these industry sectors:Professional and business services is expected to add the most jobs, with the computer systems design and related services category alone projected to add 18,600 jobs;Leisure and hospitality, 28,100 new jobs, with more than 20,000 jobs of this total in food services and drinking establishments;Educational services, health care and social assistance is projected to have the third largest increase;Nursing and residential care facilities are expected to have the largest projected collective growth rate of 31.2 percent.

Occupational employment within this combined urban and suburban area is projected to add almost 200,800 new jobs from industry growth and more than 245,400 job replacement openings, for a combined total of some 446,200 job openings.Solano County

This county’s industry employment is expected to reach 153,500 by 2020, a rise of 17.4 percent for the projections period, with 11 of 12 nonfarm sectors projected to grow by 21,700 jobs.

Two-thirds of all projected nonfarm growth is concentrated in four key sectors: Educational services, health care and social assistance sector would have 5,800 new jobs, leading all categories in job gains and accounting for 26.7 percent of nonfarm job growth; Leisure and hospitality, 3,200 jobs, growing 24.4 percent; Professional and business services, 2,700 jobs, adding 30.7 percent;Retail trade, 2,700 new positions.

Occupational employment forecasts indicate that 23,300 new jobs will be created due to industry growth and 31,030 other job openings will emerge to fill replacement needs, for a total of more than 54,330 jobs.Del Norte, Humboldt, Lake, Mendocino counties

This mostly rural region is expected to have industry employment reaching 120,480 jobs by 2020, a projected increase of 9.2 percent. Nonfarm employment is estimated to grow by more than 8,500 jobs by the end of this decade with 61 percent of all job growth found in four industry sectors:Educational services, health care and social assistance sector is projected to add the most jobs, 1,530;Retail trade, 1,510, up 10.6 percent;Government, 1,300;Leisure and hospitality, 890.

The region’s occupation employment forecast 10,680 new jobs from industry growth and 26,600 jobs openings to satisfy the need for replacements, for a total of 37,280 job openings.
