NAPA -- The estate of Elizabeth Sutro has gifted 1,380 acres of the Sutro Ranch to the Land Trust of Napa County, what the organization said is the largest single land gift in the organization's 38-year history.
Ms. Sutro and her husband, John, purchased the land in 1950 and used it as a weekend and summer retreat. The largely undeveloped land, located at the end of Atlas Peak Road in the east part of Napa Valley, will be the Land Trust's second-largest preserve, after the Dunn-Wildlake Ranch Preserve.
“We’re very thankful to Betty Sutro for her farsighted commitment to the property and its long-term protection,” said Doug Parker, CEO of the Land Trust, in a written statement. “She was a long time friend and supporter of The Land Trust and we look forward to a long relationship with her entire family.”
The Land Trust will focus on habitat restoration on the property over the next few years. Sutro Ranch is considered a fixture of the scenic undeveloped ridgeline along the east side of the valley, according to the organization.
