It's no exaggeration that Rohnert Park-based Codding has played a major role in building places to live and work in the Santa Rosa metropolitan area in the real estate development and management company's nearly seven decades in business. The average of 13 years an employee has worked there suggests the dedication of the company's 34 employees to meeting the needs of dozens of commercial tenants.

Codding owns part of Coddingtown regional mall in Santa Rosa, owns and manages Merced Mall as well as Sonoma Mountain Village and other commercial properties in Rohnert Park, and is building a Dick's Sporting Goods store just south of Coddingtown. Founded in 1947, the company built hundreds of homes in east Santa Rosa and large commercial buildings in Santa Rosa and Rohnert Park for State Farm Insurance.

Company leaders Brad Baker, chairman and CEO, and Lisa Codding, chief operating officer, believe strongly that a healthy company is a direct result of a healthy workforce. That includes helping them build their skills and selves.

"The most effective tools and assets for our company are our employees," Ms. Codding said. "As a company we remain steadfast in our dedication to presenting opportunities for growth and overall well-being for each of our employees, who become our family."

One full-time manager appreciated the ability to work remotely half the time.

"I am able to modify my schedule around the needs of my children," the employee said.

Codding offers health, dental, vision and life insurance plans, 401(k) retirement accounts -- matched contributions recently increased 425 percent -- and profit-sharing. Employees can use the gym at Sonoma Mountain Village, and the company holds an annual fitness challenge with awards. Other wellness program elements are complimentary yoga classes and confidential on-site screening for cholesterol, blood pressure, diabetes, dental health and skin cancer.

Employees are encouraged to join in group volunteer activities such as the American Heart Association walk and United Way Day of Caring.
