Best Places to Work 2014: Valley Tire & Brake

SANTA ROSA -- As a nine-time Best Places to Work winner, Valley Tire & Brake is proud of its low turnover and the longevity of it employees, which averages eight years of service.

"Not many people think changing oil and tires would be a career, but we are valued and treated with respect by our manager who makes us proud to be a part of the team."

Owner John R. McGill III says, "Our employees make our company great. Anyone can open a shop, buy equipment and fix cars. But it's the shop with employees who honestly take care of customers and repairs vehicles correctly that will succeed over time."

Employees say General Manager Eric Offenbacher is fair, impartial and flexible when time off is needed for family matters, and always listens to complaints and suggestions.

The company has had great success by promoting from within, and rarely hires new people above entry level.

Managers bring everyone coffee and donuts from time to time. Employees and families get together for quarterly barbecues and raffle off paid holidays, gift cards and other prizes.

"We succeed by using the simple formula of offering the best service and products. At the same time, we give employees autonomy to perform their jobs to the best of their abilities without excessive pressure. This breeds quality over quantity," an employee said.
