SANTA ROSA -- Council on Aging enhances the quality of life for those 60-plus by providing social, legal and financial services that promote well-being and maintain independence. The council is also well-known for its Meals on Wheels program.

"The appreciation for employees and volunteers exceeds any other place I have worked," an employee said, "It makes a person feel needed."

President and CEO Marrianne McBride said, "In a time of declining government funding and increased competition for community support, the council created revenue streams through product sales, such as Stage Grab and Go Gourmet Meals, highly successful special fund-raising events and fee-based services."

She said the council provides raises every year it is able and, when not, it gave everyone two more paid holidays. One year the council could not commit to raises but gave everyone a 2 percent bonus before Christmas when revenue topped the  financial forecast.

"We have flex schedules, and management understands family commitments and the need for personal growth, a healthy lifestyle and physical well-being," another employee added.

There are opportunities for continuing education and training plus paid time off for medical or dental appointments. The council also contributes toward the cost of cell phones and gym memberships.

A monthly on-site massage is offered for $1 per minute. "We also have the option of taking a 30-minute walk or a 15-minute break -- we take the walk!"
