Best Places to Work 2014: Nova Group, Inc.

NAPA -- A general engineering contractor with fueling facility and waterfront projects spread around the globe, Nova Group has tried to remain people-oriented over its four decades in business, a task that has become important as the company enters a high-growth phase.

"What has made and continues to make Nova a highly successful, dynamic and growing company are its people," said CEO Ron Fedrick, who started the company in 1976. "Our associates -- management, administrative and, especially, our craft workers -- produce high-quality, very safe construction projects for the U.S. Department of Defense, which provide the best value to the government and the tax-paying public and the defense of this country."

In January, Houston-based energy infrastructure contractor Quanta Services acquired Nova from Mr. Fedrick to provide capital to back bonding and financing so the company could grow quickly. The staff of 135 worldwide, with 75, at the time of the acquisition, is poised to double this year with a string of new projects. The current workforce numbers more than 200.

"More work means more opportunities for Nova personnel to grow professionally and personally, and to share profits," Mr. Fedrick said.

A Nova manager noted how Mr. Fedrick chose a buyer that would match Nova's company culture and future plans.

"This is not a one-time act of community for his company from this individual, Ron Fedrick has personally sacrificed his monetary gain on several occasions during difficult projects or economy downturns by investing his personal resources to keep the doors open throughout the firm's almost 40-year history."

The company also helps employees with educational, charitable and professional pursuits, also paying all of work-required licensing and trade association membership fees.

"The outdoor exercise track and wellness program is the best," an employee said. "I get money for taking care of myself! Awesome."

Workers can receive up to $600 a year for wellness activities such as regular exercise and medical screening. That track is put to use in an annual "Novathon" fund-raising campaign for charities and schools in exchange for laps walked or run. There are regular health fairs and blood drives.

Social activities include annual outings such as company days at a ballpark, museum, rafting, and parties for headquarters and job site workers.
