NAPA — When Margrit Mondavi came to Napa Valley five decades ago from South Dakota, she saw an economy that was still reeling from Prohibition yet fostering about 20 makeshift saloons along the dirt streets of a Yountville sans French Laundry. The valley did have wine, though it did lack the sophisticated culture Robert Mondavi and she pioneered in the succeeding years.

SANTA ROSA — Gary Hirshberg, chairman and co-founder of the world’s largest organic yogurt company, has been inspiring business leaders for over 30 years to make a sound profit — and to save the planet while they’re at it.
Using his own company Stonyfield Farm as an example, Mr. Hirshberg demonstrated that healthy environmental and social practices lead to a healthy bottom line.

Nominations for the Business Journal’s annual Healthiest Companies awards, which honor North Bay businesses that provide a healthy work environment for their employees, will close on Sept. 19. “There has been a growing movement for organizations to help their employees follow a healthy lifestyle,” said Alena Wall, executive director of the Northern California Center for Well Being, a Santa Rosa-based nonprofit that focuses on wellness matters for employers and the general population. The center helped established the criteria by which the Healthiest Companies are judged.

A huge storm that rescued Marin’s water reserves in early 2014 is far from the norm. Water officials stress that regular drought conditions is a reality in the North Bay and beyond.
