NAPA – New Technology Foundation, which operates New Technology High School in Napa, is merging with KnowledgeWorks of Cincinnati, Ohio, it was announced today.
Knowledge Works wants to make New Tech the centerpiece of a new strategy to provide comprehensive leadership and technical assistance on high school education. New Tech, operates about 41 innovative schools nationwide and three in Northern California, the first being in Napa.
KnowlegeWorks focuses on restructuring large high schools into more effective small high schools and creating successful Early College High Schools. Its goal is to double the number of these learner-centered high schools over the next two years.
Through its EdWorks division, KnowledgeWorks led the creation of more than 70 small high schools across 11 urban districts of Ohio, six of them early college schools. The schools have increased graduation rates by 30 percent and test scores have improved for 17,000 urban students.
The New Technology Foundation in 2000 received a $4.9 million grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
