Editor: As one of the fastest-growing counties in California, Solano County must do all it can to attract, grow and retain jobs. One important step is taking control over how much we pay for electricity. Right now there is no better tool for tracking and managing our electricity use than new SmartMeters being rolled out across the state. With SmartMeters installed in our homes and businesses, we can quickly access data on how much power we use at any given time, and take steps to minimize use when rates are highest. That will lead to real savings on our monthly bills.Tens of millions of SmartMeters are now in use worldwide. I understand that some concerns have been raised here in California, but PG&E and the Public Utilities Commission have both responded quickly and will be working with customers to address their questions. No new technology comes without its hiccups – but if we hope to continue attracting high-tech industry and its high-skilled jobs, we must not be afraid to let new technology into our homes, especially if it will save us time and money.   Sandy PersonVice presidentSolano Economic Development Corp.Fairfield707-864-1855sandy@solanoedc.org
