Sebastopol-based Safari Books Online is expanding Short Cuts by offering Elements and Shorts from FT Press Delivers, focused on providing business lessons and skills training from leading business executives. Access to Short Cuts, including Elements and Shorts, is included at no additional cost for Safari Books Online subscribers.


Bamboo Sourcery in Sebastopol accepted the Environmental Best Practices Award from the Business Environmental Alliance because of its efforts to reduce its environmental footprint while saving money. Its water and energy conservation efforts include a PV solar system, buying locally, using post consumer recycled materials and avoiding pesticides and herbicides.

At the Climate Protection Everybody Profits conference in Sebastopol $3,500 in prizes will be awarded for the best greenhouse emissions pricing and financing policy ideas submitted by attendees. The deadline for entries is Friday, April 16. This year's conference will focus on carbon pricing and financing as tools to motivate behavior to address climate change. Climate Protection Everybody Profits is a yearly collaboration of the cities in Sonoma County, the county of Sonoma and Sonoma County Water Agency.

Petaluma-based HydroPoint Data Systems Inc. reported that its customer Campbell Union School District saved 36 million gallons of water in 2009, returning $111,000 in savings to the district's bottom line by replacing antiquated irrigation timers with HydroPoint's smart irrigation systems across its 12 campuses.

Nonprofit & Community Organizations

Bank of Marin teamed up with the Ritter Center to display one of 25 art houses decorated by some of the county’s most celebrated artists in a fundraising campaign titled Art Houses of Marin. The miniature house, decorated by artist Kathleen Lipinski, will be on display at the bank’s Greenbrae branch. All 25 Art Houses of Marin will be displayed at various locations throughout the county for two months before being auctioned on May 1 at the home of Don Santa, owner of Woodland’s Market in Kentfield.


Northgate mall in San Rafael was awarded by the International Council of Shopping Centers Inc. with a Silver U.S. Maxi Award. Northgate, which won in the Grand Opening, Expansion and Renovation category, was recently transformed from a traditional, enclosed shopping center to a modern indoor/outdoor shopping environment.


Autodesk in San Rafael released several new software applications, including a comprehensive 3-D application, new versions of its Digital Entertainment Creation software and Kynapse and Human IK game development middleware, and the latest version of its Academy Award–winning 3-D animation Maya software, which has been used on every Oscar-winning movie for Best Visual Effects since 2001.

Roxio in Santa Clara, a division of Novato-based Sonic Solutions, was chosen by MSI, a manufacturer of computer hardware products and solutions, for its 3-D All-In-One PCs. The new version of Roxio CinePlayer is the first application to support the playback of true-3-D content in a wide range of video file formats, as well as 3-D DVDs.


Ledson Winery in Sonoma will launch a line of wines featuring  former baseball player and Hall of Famer, Orlando Cepeda, who will be at Ledson Winery on April 17 signing commemorative bottles. Proceeds from the sale of Ledson’s “Baby Bull” Zinfandel will benefit the local Harmony Foundation for Children and the San Francisco Junior Giants Program.

The Sonoma Valley Vintners & Growers Alliance in partnership with the Fairmont Sonoma Mission Inn & Spa opened the Big 3 Wine Bar at the Inn, a unique tasting room pouring only Sonoma Valley designate products.
