Richard Powers, M.D., is the current president of the Sonoma County Medical Association. He will be succeeded July 1 by Catherine Gutfreund, M.D., with Kaiser Permanente in Santa Rosa.
Dr. Gutfreund is a native of Kentucky and holds a B.A. in microbiology from the University of Georgia and an M.D. from the Medical College of Georgia. She previously worked as a primary care physician at the Wiesbaden Air Base in Germany before finishing her family medicine residency at the Henry Ford Health System in Detroit. Dr. Gutfreund has practiced medicine in Sonoma County since 2000, first in private practice in Santa Rosa and Sebastopol, now at Kaiser Permanente in Santa Rosa.
Dr. Powers is a Sebastopol family physician and has been in practice since 1975. He served two years in the Air Force Medical Group, where he rose to the rank of lieutenant colonel, after graduating from the Community Hospital Family Practice Residency (now called the Santa Rosa Family Medicine Center). The San Luis Obispo-born and San Jose-raised Dr. Powers attended Stanford University, where he obtained a B.A. in English in 1965, an M.A. in medical sociology in 1968 and an M.D. in 1970.
