NOVATO – The city of Novato is undertaking a streetlight test to get public feedback in its selection of new energy-efficient fixtures. In 2009 the city was awarded nearly $500,000 in a Energy Efficiency Community Block Grant, of which $382,000 was designated for conversion of existing high-pressure sodium streetlight fixtures to energy-efficient fixtures.

Four LED fixtures have been installed between Rowland Boulevard and Adele Drive, and four induction fixtures were installed between Arthur Drive and Yukon Way. Both types of lights being considered would reduce monthly energy costs by about 40 percent and reduce routine maintenance costs due to a lifespan three to four times that of the current fixtures.

An online survey at is available for public input on the different streetlights. Staff will compile comments and prepare a recommendation to the City Council at its Feb. 8 meeting.
