Seattle-based Alaska Airlines, whose subsidiary Horizon Air is the only airline serving Santa Rosa, in January announced a changeup in flights in and out of Sonoma County. Service to and from Las Vegas are ending as San Diego flights are beginning.

Alaska Airlines said passenger travel between Las Vegas and Santa Rosa wasn't up to company targets.

San Diego is a hub for high-technology innovation, particularly in biotechnology. The North Bay also has clusters of biotechnology and medical device development, such as Medtronic and TriVascular in Santa Rosa as well as BioMarin Pharmaceutical and Buck Institute for Research on Aging both in Novato.
