PETALUMA -- Telecommunications infrastructure system and software developer Cyan entered a deal to jointly develop products that help service providers significantly expand capacity efficiently.

Under the agreement, Cyan and Bridgewater, N.J.-based Nistica would jointly build high-capacity linecards that provide multidegree reconfigurable optical add-drop multiplexing (ROADM) capabilities. Nistica would combine its compact, optics-only versions of wavelength selective switches (WSS) with an intelligent optical layer to deliver single-slot integrated line-cards that provide 2-, 4- or 8-degree connectivity in emerging networks.

Nistica tapped Fabrinet (NYSE: FN) as the supplier of printed circuit board assemblies. Fujikura Fiber Optics Vietnam will make the linecard assembly.

Cyan’s Z-series multilayer packet-optical transport platform is currently equipped with WSS-ROADM modules. The addition of these next-generation integrated linecards allows carriers to expand in multiple dimensions: multidegree mesh nodes, capacity boosts up to 96 channels, and a grid-flexible architecture with 3.125 GHz resolution granularity that is unsurpassed in the industry.

“Cyan continues to innovate by partnering with our strategic suppliers,” said Michael Hatfield, president of Cyan. "The combination of our unified control plane, our recently announced 100G coherent transponders and this expanded multidegree ROADM architecture will accelerate the bandwidth virtualization trends we are witnessing in software-defined networks."

“As Cyan continues to grow, we are constantly looking for turnkey solutions that enhance our engineering resources. Nistica team’s proven track record in designing and developing linecards, as well as delivering high-volume modules to Cyan was a key factor in our decision,” added Norm Foust, Cyan vice president of operations.

Service providers are focused on optimizing their networks via layer convergence and improved bandwidth utilization, while managing their total cost of ownership. “Nistica is committed to improving operational efficiency via our cost-optimized optical solutions. We are excited to offer Cyan double the capacity in a single-slot,” remarked Ashish Vengsarkar, Nistica CEO. “Linecards allow us to fully utilize our in-house capabilities while leveraging synergies from Fujikura’s optical portfolio of products and Fabrinet’s proven abilities in delivering high volume printed circuit board assemblies.”

As a leading provider of precision manufacturing services to original equipment manufacturers of complex products, Fabrinet is a trusted partner in the optical communications industry. “While we are proud of our existing customer base, we continue to seek out emerging players who have shown tremendous momentum in the industry,” said Dr. Harpal Gill, Fabrinet president and chief operating officer. "We are pleased to be chosen to partner with Nistica and Cyan and we are committed to helping them deliver world-class products to their customers."
