Scott Newman, administration manager at Smith Ranch Homes Homeowners’ Association in San Rafael, recently earned the professional community association manager credential from Community Associations Institute. Mr. Newman is one of less than 2,200 managers worldwide who have earned the level of professional recognition over 20 years. A Smith Ranch Homes employee since 2003, he graduated from Dominican University of California with a degree in strategic management and maintains certification as a certified manager of community associations, association management specialist, certified community association manager and notary public.Hospitality and Tourism

The Meritage Resort and Spa hired Krisztian Karkus as its new executive chef. Chef Karkus comes to The Meritage Resort from one of its sister properties in the Meritage Collection, The Balboa Bay Resort in Newport Beach. Chef Karkus was born and raised in Hungary near Budapest. During his summer holidays, Krisztian went to work at a small boutique hotel in the mountains in the Danube River Valley. He returned to work with the chef every summer until he finished school and then decided to continue his culinary education through formal training. Most recently he worked as the executive sous chef at The Balboa Bay Resort, where he was responsible for the operation of all three restaurants, banquets and room services.  At The Meritage,  Chef Karkus will oversee all hotel food operations, including the signature Siena Restaurant, Crush Ultra Lounge, The Commons: A Wine Bar, Blend Cafe, banquets, room service and all signature events. He will continue the resort’s tradition of blending Tuscan and Napa flavors together using the finest ingredients, while bringing in some of his own culinary styles and inspirations from around the globe.Human Resources

Don Sebastiani & Sons promoted Tom Hawkins to chief financial officer and general manager. In his new position, he will oversee the operations, winemaking and human resources functions of the Sonoma-based company.

Mr. Hawkins has been CFO since June 2010. He began his career in 1981 at Beam Global Spirits & Wine in Kentucky. He moved to California in 1999 to oversee Beam’s initial investment in the wine business with Sonoma County’s Geyser Peak and Canyon Road wineries. He was instrumental in Beam's acquisition of Wild Horse Winery in 2003 and the integration of brands Clos du Bois, Gary Farrell, Buena Vista, Atlas Peak and Cockburns, acquired from Allied Domecq in 2005.
