More than 50 students graduated from financial literacy courses sponsored by Dixon-based First Northern Bank. It is the second year that the bank has sponsored the courses, with classes offered this year at six high schools. The semester-long course is offered through EverFi, a firm that has created a Web-based platform.
Novato-based Hennessy Funds has been named the 2013 recipient of the prestigious Community Investment Award, presented by The Mutual Fund Education Alliance, a national mutual-fund industry trade association. This award is presented annually to an asset-management firm in recognition of outstanding community-service contributions such as special programs, partnerships, in-kind support of goods and services, employee volunteerism or other activities that have a positive impact on their community. Hennessy also has won two MFEA STAR Awards, which are presented annually for excellence in mutual-fund marketing and communications. SCS Engineers, an award-winning environmental consulting firm in Santa Rosa, was chosen by Lake County government to provide design, permitting and construction support services for the installation of a landfill-gas collection and control system at Eastlake Sanitary Landfill in Clearlake. The $155,000 consulting-services contract also includes ai- quality and utility-services permitting, engineering support during construction phases and construction quality-assurance inspections.Economic Development

Santa Rosa-based Peregrine Performance Group, a training and performance-improvement consulting firm formerly known as Russ Powell Consulting, celebrated its first anniversary this fall. Its founders, Joe Halpin and Russ Powell, each spent more than 20 years working in the learning industry. Mr. Halpin's history includes contributions to the development of the award-winning Sherpa Learning platform, and Mr. Powell's background includes work with entities including the Coast Guard in Petaluma and Sun Microsystems in Santa Clara. Peregrine clients have included Nelson Staffing, Sungevity, Genentech and ThermaSource.
California Maritime Academy on Mare Island in Vallejo celebrated the opening of its new dining and meeting center Oct. 24. The new dining center replaces the previous dining hall originally constructed in the 1950s. It was designed to hold only 130 students. The new facility seats 400 of the 900 registered cadets at meal time and 272 people for banquets. The $17 million project was funded by fees paid by cadets on their meal plans. The three-story dining center has 26,000 square feet and offers two stories for dining purposes and a mezzanine level that can be divided into three separate rooms as needed. The Spirits Bar opened at 1313 Main (1313main.com) in downtown Napa on Oct. 31. It offers tasting in shots and flights of vintage, exceptional and rare spirits from notable producers in the world. The Spirits Bar offers selections grouped by source, such as apples and pears, grapes and grape pomace, agave, "bitters," herbs and "fernet."
