SANTA ROSA -- Santa Rosa telecommunications firm Sonic.net has received a “perfect” privacy score from the San Francisco-based Electronic Frontier Foundation for the third year in a row -- the only internet service provider to do so.
The annual report, which evaluates six areas involving customer data protection, transparency and advocacy, includes 26 technology companies ranging from social media to e-commerce. Released earlier this month, the report notes an overall uptick in “best practices” among companies but recognized only nine companies with high marks in all categories.
“Since its inclusion in our Who Has Your Back report in 2012, Sonic has received credit in every category we evaluated. This year is no exception: Sonic earns a commendable six stars for their strong commitments to transparency and user privacy. Sonic sets a strong example for other ISPs,” the report reads.
Sonic.net, which provides Internet, telephone and packaged television service in primary markets of the Bay Area, Sacramento and Los Angeles, joins Apple, CREDO Mobile, Dropbox, Facebook, Google, Microsoft, Twitter and Yahoo as top performers, according to the nonprofit group’s report.
Those companies each require a warrant from law enforcement entities requesting content of users, inform users of government data requests, publish transparency reports, publish guidelines for law enforcement, fight for privacy rights in courts and advocate for those rights in Congress.
Apple and Yahoo were shown to have made major improvements in policies concerning government access to data, and the majority of companies now issue transparency reports.
