Describe the facilities you oversee: Facilities include a 116-bed hospital, four medical office campuses with a total of eight buildings, and three administrative properties.

Tell us a little bit about yourself: I was a hospital facilities director in the Chicago area before relocating to Northern California to seize an opportunity with Kaiser Permanente in Solano County. Within 18 months, I was promoted to my current position in the North Bay.

What do you see as the role of the facilities managers within your organization?: A health care facilities manager is responsible for what we call, the “environment of care,” a concept that includes the overall functioning of physical buildings, their cleanliness and appeal, along with the safety and security of buildings and occupants.

There are other roles and responsibilities, such as our 24/7 switchboard, food and nutrition, landscaping, campus maintenance and supply procurement.

What achievement are you most proud of?: My family: my wife and three children.

What is your biggest challenge today?: Health care consumers have many choices that can affect their decisions about where to receive care. My departments play a significant role in creating a “wow experience” for our members. As such, we are constantly reviewing ways to enhance our programs to make them better, faster and consistent. We use survey tools and focus groups to continually improve the things our member’s find valuable, while eliminating those aspects they dislike.

What the next major project either under way or on the horizon?: Kaiser Permanente--San Rafael is wrapping up the new construction of a state-of-the-art Emergency Department. Our next project will be a focused cosmetic refresh of our inpatient rooms and units.

What product or service would/or is helping you do your job more effectively?: Because Kaiser Permanente is a group of 30- medical centers with a common focus, the organization is constantly introducing new initiatives to enhance the patient experience. When a success story is captured, it is quickly relayed to the other sites so that we get better as a group and march in unison when it comes to providing excellent care.

How do you think your profession will change in the next five years?: The status quo is never acceptable in health care. Health care facilities managers must always be searching for ways to enhance value at lower overall costs.

The Affordable Care Act has added additional urgency to this mission. With traditional hospital departmental silos deteriorating, my staff and I are challenged to remain bold enough to ask hard questions and agile enough to stretch our professional capabilities.
