Kaiser Permanente is a community benefit and giving organization, providing the gifts of care, time, money, expertise and resources to improve the health of residents in the North Bay.

“Our community-giving program is enhanced by the generosity of more than 4,300 Marin-Sonoma employees,” said Judy Coffey, senior vice president and area manager. “We care, we nurture, we educate, we build and we deliver in the communities we serve.”

KP’s giving spirit can be found throughout the region at fundraisers, in local clinics, at community events, on boards, committees and commissions of hundreds of local nonprofit organizations, government entities and local schools.

Organization-wide, KP giving in Northern California exceeded $800 million in 2015. That doesn’t count the local contribution of several million dollars annually in uncompensated and subsidized care plus free online health information.

More than 150 KP Sonoma-Marin physicians and staff members serve on nearly 230 community boards, commissions and committees. Those include The Healthy Marin Partnership, North Bay Leadership Council, Redwood Empire Food Bank, Santa Rosa, San Rafael and Petaluma Chambers of Commerce, Sonoma County Health Action Council, Sonoma County Library Commission and local workforce investment boards.

In addition, physicians, nurses and staff gave $126,000 in 2015 to local organizations of their choice in the annual Community Giving Campaign. Corporate matching funds nearly doubled that figure. In all, the organization awarded more than $750,000 in grants last year to support 32 Sonoma-Marin County nonprofit organizations.

At the same time, KP Educational Theatre programs promoted healthy lifestyles and health information to 17,717 students and attendees at 34 schools in Marin and Sonoma Counties.

KP also provides medical education to physician and pharmacy residents, nursing students, summer youth interns and clinical and allied health trainees.

“We share our medical research, protocols and clinical best practices with local community clinics, including programs such as Exercise as a Vital Sign and PHASE,” Coffey said. PHASE stands for Preventing Heart Attacks and Strokes Everyday.

An additional $1 million grant went to Healthy Eating, Active Living programs in underserved neighborhoods and schools. About 80 employees took the “Day On - Not a Day Off” challenge and volunteered during the Martin Luther King Day of Caring.
