Marin County approves SMART Train shuttle

The County of Marin has taken action to become the first employer to provide “last mile” access for its workers to and from the SMART Train station to their place of employment.

The county approved $200,000 from the general fund to provide no-cost shuttle service to four county offices in San Raphael for a period of one year, said Craig Tackabery, chief assistant director, Public Works.

The shuttle will operate in a loop serving eight morning and eight evening trains, and will have a capacity for 30 sitting and 10 standing passengers.

The action was approved by the board of supervisors Jan. 25.

“The first and last miles are going to be key for all SMART stations in getting people from the station to their place of work. I think this is a part of the solution… I think we also need to enhance walking and biking as options getting to and from the train,” said Supervisor Damon Connolly. “We will continue to monitor it, and I think this is a good start.”

The SMART Train, initially scheduled to begin service late 2016 but was delayed due to technical difficulties, is now projecting a launch date of late spring.

The county has contracted with Transmetro Inc., of San Francisco to begin service coinciding with the trains’. The one-year shuttle program will act as a bridge as the county coordinates a plan with Marin Transit.

“We are really the county that is taking the initiative in setting fares and taking a survey to see who would ride this and then trying to meet that need,” said Supervisor Judy Arnold.
