What are the largest U.S. wineries, and how are direct-to-consumer wine sales doing?
New reports provide some answers.
The direct-to-consumer business continues record growth, according to an annual report from ShipCompliant and Wines & Vines. The value of direct wine shipments last year reached a record $2.3 billion, up 18.5 percent from 2015. Overall sales volume was more than 5 million cases, according to the report.
Shipments from Sonoma County grew at 29 percent, twice as much as wines from Napa County, the report found.
The top five shipment destination states were California (31 percent), Texas (9 percent), New York (6 percent), Florida (5 percent) and Washington (5 percent).
Trade magazine Wine Business Monthly ranked E & J Gallo of Modesto the largest domestic producer, with 75 million cases sold last year. High on the list from the North Bay were Trinchero Family Estates of St. Helena (No. 4 with 19 million cases) and Jackson Family Wines (No. 9 with 6 million cases).
Counting virtual as well as bonded wineries, the magazine reported 9,091 wineries in the U.S. The number includes both grape and nongrape wineries (wines made from other fruits).
California had the most wineries, followed by Washington and Oregon. The number of Texas wineries increased by almost 13 percent — higher than the national increase of 4.3 percent.
