Residence: Sebastopol, CA 38 years

Professional background: Claims & litigation management business (25th year!)

Describe your organization:

RMS contracts with public sector clients and handles claims and litigation management. Our clients include cities, counties, and public sector risk pools in California and Nevada. RMS celebrated its 25th year in business in August 2017. We have been in our building in Cotati for the last 20 years right on the corner of Old Redwood Highway and George Street.

Tell us a little bit about yourself:

We are both native Californians and moved to Sonoma County in 1980. Ken grew up in San Francisco and Sharon in Novato. As we like to say “we have not gone very far from home.” We have 2 daughters, a son-in-law and two wonderful grandchildren, whom are both at Analy High School. We are very lucky that they live in Sebastopol, too.

What is your role in the organization?

We are both owners/principals of RMS – Ken handles the client’s needs and Sharon runs the office/payroll What achievement are you most proud of? Being able to run a successful business for many years and giving back to the community, by serving as Board members to several non-profits over the years – the current being Becoming Independent (of which, our youngest daughter is a participant), donating back our time and financial resources and helping others.

What is your biggest challenge today?: Balancing our work life and finding time to enjoy life. What is the next major project either under way or on the horizon?

Retirement and transitioning of our business, so that it stays viable for many more years.

What motivates you to volunteer your time and talent?

We both feel that we have been very fortunate in life and work, and cannot take that for granted. We feel blessed that we are able to help others and be a part of this wonderful community, we call home .

How do you think the role of the board member will change in the next five years?

Board members have three things to give to an organization: time, money and expertise. Given the real need that organizations have in our County, we think a Board member needs to be prepared to give as much of the three as they can in the future. Being a Board member is a true commitment and no longer just a status position.
