Active 20-30 Club of Santa Rosa No. 50 has won one of North Bay Business Journal’s Nonprofit Leadership Awards.

Describe your organization

The Active 20-30 Club of Santa Rosa No. 50 is a group of like-minded young professionals between the ages of 20–39 who volunteer to improve the lives of underprivileged youth in Santa Rosa. We do this through large-scale fundraisers, but more importantly through direct philanthropic endeavors.

Tell us about the organization’s volunteer activities

There are three main volunteer activities that occur annually. Kid’s Shopping Spree occurs at the beginning of August every year. At this event, we take 250 kids from Santa Rosa and Windsor back to school shopping at Coddingtown Mall. The kids get a complete wardrobe, a backpack full of school supplies, a haircut, and a dental exam. After the shopping is complete, the kids are treated to a full breakfast, with demonstrations by the Santa Rosa Police Department and the Children’s Museum of Sonoma County.

The Dave Jones-Landry Memorial Kid’s Fishing Trip occurs in the fall. Named after a former member who unexpectedly passed, we take over 60 kids to a trout farm, where each learns how to fish, catches two trout and takes them home. In addition, we cook them a nice lunch, and there are tractor rides and games.

Finally, there’s Kids Christmas. At this event, we host 125 kids and their families to a Christmas dinner. After the meal, Santa arrives, and each child receives a present, a moment with Santa, and a picture to take home.

What draws the organization to volunteering?

It’s part of the primary mission of the organization and the common bond that brings together not only our local club members but also every member across the U.S. and internationally. This is embodied in our motto, “Youth, to be served, must serve.”

What achievement is your organization most proud of?

Over the past year, the Active 20-30 Club of Santa Rosa No. 50 has elevated itself as a leader among nonprofit organizations. The three major fundraisers from earlier this year have netted over $110,000 in proceeds to serve our mission. To that end, the club has donated roughly $75,000 over the past six months to more than 16 nonprofit organizations in the area.

Key donations include:

• $10,000-plus to the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Santa Rosa to construct a new media center for the 683 kids at their facility.

• About $7,700 for the Santa Rosa Metro Chamber to help put on the Mike Hauser Academy.

• Roughly $11,000 to Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Santa Rosa to construct a new playground at the Family Support Center.

• $2,500 to the Children’s Museum of Sonoma County for its Family Access Program.

However, donations are not exclusively limited to Santa Rosa. In fact, $10,000 was donated to help save the Cotati-Rohnert Park Project Grad program this year after all of its money was embezzled, and the club has committed to a $15,000 donation to build a playground at the Lake County International Charter School.

In addition, there are 25 current members or alumni of the Active 20-30 Club of Santa Rosa No. 50 who have won the North Bay Business Journal’s Forty Under 40 award since its inception, including 15 in the past three years alone.

What is your biggest challenge today?

Seeking new, like-minded professionals in the area to join our organization.

What is the next major project on the horizon?

Planning for the next year’s major fundraisers remains a top priority. Each year, the club hosts three major fundraisers: Battle of the Brews which is now in its 21st year, the town of Windsor’s fireworks show “Kaboom” and Santa Rosa’s show “Red, White and Boom,” which has been voted as the Press Democrat’s Best Fireworks Show for seven years in a row. The proceeds from these events help to fund the donations that we make, and we are actively seeking more impactful donation opportunities moving forward.

How do you believe volunteering will change in the next five years?

A stronger social media presence will drive increased visibility to our organization and greater donation opportunities.

Is there anything you would like to add?

Given the mission of the club, the near-record amount of money that was both raised and donated over the past six months, the composition and professional diversity of its members, and the impact that it is having in not only Santa Rosa but also Rohnert Park, Cotati, Middletown and beyond, the Active 20-30 Club of Santa Rosa No. 50 is honored to be receiving this distinction from the North Bay Business Journal.
