North Bay unemployment largely dips below California's rate in July

Unemployment rates in five of the North Bay's six counties fell below the California's unemployment rate of 4.2 percent in July, according to state figures released Friday.

Marin County saw the lowest unemployment rate in the North Bay, at 2.5 percent; followed by 2.9 percent in both Napa and Sonoma counties, according to figures from the California Employment Development Department. Lake County reported the region's highest unemployment rate, at 5 percent, while Mendocino County's unemployment rate was 3.7 percent.

Sonoma County

The unemployment rate in Sonoma County was 2.9 percent in July, down from a revised 3 percent in June 2018, and below the year-ago estimate of 3.7 percent. This compares with an unadjusted unemployment rate of 4.4 percent for California, and 4.1 percent for the nation during the same period.

Mining, logging and construction added jobs, while there was a dip among jobs in government, manufacturing, and professional and business services.

Solano County

The unemployment rate in the Solano County was 4.1 percent in July, down from a revised 4.2 percent in June 2018, and below the year-ago estimate of 5.1 percent. The numbers compare with an unadjusted unemployment rate of 4.4 percent for California and 4.1 percent for the nation during the same period.

The leisure and hospitality industries added 600 jobs; mining and construction added jobs; financial activities. Government jobs declined by 1,900.

Marin County

The unemployment rate in Marin County was 2.5 percent in July, down from a revised 2.7 percent in June, and below the year-ago estimate of 3.2 percent. The rates compare with an unadjusted unemployment rate of 4.4 percent for the state and 4.1 percent for the nation during the same period.

Industries adding jobs in the county include mining, logging and construction; trade, transportation and utilities; information, professional and business services; educational and health services; and leisure and hospitality. The government sector lost 200 jobs, the only sector in the county to see a drop.

Napa County

The unemployment rate in Napa County was 2.9 percent in July, down from a revised 3.1 percent in June 2018. Rates were below the year-ago estimate of 3.7 percent. The numbers compare with an unadjusted unemployment rate of 4.4 percent for the state, and 4.1 percent for the nation during the same period.

The manufacturing industry and the trade, transportation and utilities sector added jobs, as did the manufacturing, leisure and hospitality industries. There were declines in government jobs, as well as in education and health services.
