There have been few years in recent memory as ripe for merger-and-acquisition activity as 2013 in the wine industry, particularly on the North Coast. A perceived shortfall in grape supply, easing credit terms and favorable wine consumption trends in the U.S. set the stage for a strong year.
That momentum is likely to continue in 2014, including possible moves from international buyers.

CALISTOGA — A French family behind high-end wineries there has purchased Araujo Estate Wines, a Napa Valley cabernet sauvignon producer considered among the world’s best.
“Araujo Estate and its jewel, the unique Eisele Vineyard, have been producing consistently one of the very best wines of Napa Valley,” the buyer said.

Homebuilder-turned-vintner Bart Araujo and his wife, Daphne, purchased the acclaimed 39-acre Eisele Vineyard just east of Calistoga in 1990.
Mr. Araujo will be a panelist at the Impact Napa 2012 conference the morning of Aug. 30. He spoke with the Business Journal about the challenges and opportunities facing a high-end, small-production Napa Valley winery.
