June 7th, 2010ALEXANDER VALLEY – Sonoma County planning officials will have to decide starting this month whether a proposal to commercially skim gravel bars in several miles of the Russian River through Alexander Valley would be worth it for increasing the supply of choice aggregate, protecting acres of riverside vineyards and a key bridge from erosion and opening creeks to migration of protected fish.

May 24th, 2010Francis Ford Coppola had about 450 applicants turn out earlier this month for 130 positions at his newly renovated Geyserville winery. The number of experienced applicants, mainly in hospitality functions, negated the need for a second job fair, according to a spokeswoman. | The battle against the European grapevine moth has expanded to six California counties. | Healdsburg-based Ascentia Wine Estates, which started in June 2008 with more than $200 million raised from GESD Capital Partners of San Francisco and wine marketer W.J. Deutsch & Sons of New York, is now in a legal battle with the latter. | Recent crop reports underscore the larger 2009 winegrape crop in the North Coast. | Pigs will soon be flying through winery pipes. Named after the squealing noise made by devices the petroleum industry uses to maintain pipe interiors, these food-grade silicone “pigs” were devised by ARS Enterprises of Calistoga to move the remainder of wine between areas of a winery without water as well as clean deposits left in the pipes. |

Construction: Mi Pueblo opens in Marin; Santa Rosa store plans second location
March 22nd, 2010Mi Pueblo Foods opened its San Rafael store, renovated from a 36,000-square-foot shuttered Circuit City store, on Wednesday. … Rancho Mendoza Super Mercado is reworking 14,000 square feet of former high-technology development and furniture store space at 1201 Piner Road in northwest Santa Rosa to create a second location. … The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service last week expanded the critical habitat for the threatened California red-legged frog into six counties not covered by the 2006 ruling on habitat, including 21,814 acres along Mill Creek on the Mendocino Coast and two locations in Sonoma County, encompassing 1,564 acres in and around Annadel State Park east of Santa Rosa and 4,932 acres on Sonoma Mountain. … Ken Lafranchi of Santa Rosa-based Lafranchi Architecture and Development said the bulk of interest for the forthcoming remodel of the 2,400-square-foot Geyserville Post Office is coming from a group of boutique vintners interested in setting up a collective tasting room. … The Dutra Group’s proposal for an asphalt plant and aggregate distribution facility along the Petaluma River was postponed from March 16 to the May 11 Sonoma County Board of Supervisors meeting.
